While outwardly similar to other Type VIIC U-boats constructed by the Nazi Kriegsmarine during World War II, U-604's six wartime patrols distinguished themselves through extraordinary events. This book utilizes survivor accounts and the vessel's war diary to provide a comprehensive depiction of life and operations aboard U-604 amidst intense Atlantic convoy battles. The submarine achieved notable successes, including an attack that resulted in the highest single loss of U.S. merchant mariners. However, its operational achievements are overshadowed by the dramatic circumstances of its demise. Severely damaged by repeated aerial attacks, U-604's commanding officer orchestrated a daring, yet ultimately tragic, rescue attempt involving two other U-boats from its wolfpack. This publication includes numerous previously unpublished photographs.
