It's been eleven years since the discovery of SHEVA, an ancient retrovirus found in human DNA. This virus caused mutations in the human genome, leading to a new generation of genetically enhanced humans. Now, these kids have grown up and are facing a world that is not too happy about their existence. These special youths have advanced traits that represent a major shift in human development, but they also carry viruses that could wipe out the old human race.
The fear and hatred towards these virus children have made them an oppressed group, locked away in special schools by the government, hunted down by bounty hunters, and demonized by some people. However, there are some who resist treating these kids like threats and fear what might happen if the government's harsh measures continue.
Scientists Kaye Lang and Mitch Rafelson are part of this resistance. They were once at the forefront of studying the SHEVA outbreak but now live as outcasts in Virginia with their daughter, Stella, a curious virus child eager to connect with others like her.
Despite their efforts to stay hidden, Kaye, Mitch, and Stella are still on the government's radar. Agencies are watching their every move, ready to strike in their mission to protect "humankind" at any cost.
