"Throughout my life, songwriting has been my primary mode of expression, a craft that allowed me to distill complex emotions into concise, rhyming verses set to music. The prospect of writing a book had never truly crossed my mind. However, upon reaching the milestone of fifty, a compelling urge arose to explore a different form of storytelling, to delve into extended prose that proved as intellectually stimulating and personally captivating as any song I had ever composed.
This impulse gave birth to Broken Music, a narrative that focuses on the formative years of my life, from childhood and adolescence to the cusp of my success with The Police—a period largely unknown to the public. I was not interested in a conventional, exhaustive autobiography. Instead, I felt compelled to examine specific, resonant moments, pivotal relationships, and defining events that continue to shape my understanding of the child I once was and the man I have become. This book is an exploration of those crucial fragments, a journey into the heart of my early self."
